Just finished watching the end of The Punisher, I suppose this is the right post to talk about it. Why? Because I'm bored and have no friends to talk to, that's why.Excuse me...do you have some time to talk about our lord and saviour Frank Castle?
Even though I liked the show, and I'm looking forward to season 2, it still kind of sucked, it wasn't very Punishershy at all, it was more like... Frank Castle, a coming of age story. A slightly more edgy season of Arrow or something.
MINOR SPOILERS INCOMING.
It was like they were trying to make him more human and likeable, like they were afraid he would be too unlikeable if he was just killing criminals, and at the same time they were afraid of glorifying what is essentially a mass murderer. That was a big mistake. Because that is exactly what the fans want.
The Punisher does not play the guitar, The Punisher does not get upset over sandwiches (unless its a salami sandwich maybe), he does not go to counceling to deal with his emotions, he does not go get a job, he does not go to fix some ladies garage door and sink.
He does not go "aw maaaan, do i really have to go?", when someone he supposedly cares about might be in danger. What is he, some kind of delinquent teenage kid?
Punisher only cares about one thing, punishing. He sees the world in extremes of black and white, either you are a bad person, and you need to be dead, or you're not. He's fighting a war, in his head, an endless war against the scum of the earth, it will never be over, he will never rest until he is dead, and even then he will find his way back to do it all over again. The Punisher could fight his way back from hell, and then a day after he would be back on his horse, slaughtering criminals, not even death would make him take a day off to play the guitar and eat sandwiches.
His final words at the end of the show was "I don't have a war to fight, I'm scared". Wtf, The Punisher does not get fucking scared...unless he somehow killed every criminal in the world and no longer has anyone to murder. That might make him scared of the boredom.
We only got to see that good Punisher for the first 2 minutes of the show, and then he was gone until the end, and then he turned even more emo then before. So they KNEW how to do him, yet decided not to. It was almost like they just did that to tease us.
Or he has some multiple personalities going on.
They even tease a Frank vs. Ma Gnucci storyline at the beginning of the show, but then nah...what bollocks.
I thought Netflix was gonna be like the dark and gritty version of the MCU, but it was more like a teen show sometimes. Other times it was like a shitty cop buddy show. Even Daredevil was more edgy then this. I think season 2 of Daredevil did Punisher more right as well. There he was more of a mythical creature that we only saw show up once in a while, to create horror and mayhem, as he should.
Maybe in this day and age, with all the mass shootings and terrorism, we won't get to see classic Punisher again, the media is too political for that, every wamyn character has to harp on about misogyknee and racism, and they even shoehorned in some alt-right guy that you know is a bad guy right away, because he is southern, and then he believes white christians are the oppressed minority in the country. Obvious Trump voter villain character.
Things I liked :
- Jon Bernthal kinda reminds me of Sylvester Stallone sometimes, even does the same battle cries. HUAAAAAAAA!! He's a decent Punisher and I'm looking forward to seeing what else he's gonna do.
- The first 2 minutes of the show.
- The last 2 episodes. 2 murders in particular were gruesome as fuck, it was the best part of the show, if only more of it was like that.
- Micro & Frank had some good moments, despite the sillyness.
- It wasn't Luke Cage or Iron Fist.
- No fucking black chick nurse around to tell Frank what to do.
- Nice setup for season 2. But they will probably go for something completely different, like Frank becoming a rat exterminator, and fights corrupt politicians in Washington. Republicans. Fighting them with hugs.
In conclusion, better then the other Netflix shows, except for Daredevil season 2, and possibly season 1.
7/10 would watch again.
